WELL-known cricketer and fishing fanatic Dom Thornely made a recent trip to Seal Rocks on the NSW Mid-North Coast. As Thornely explains, this trip was anything but ordinary, for all the right reasons!
“I headed up to Seal Rocks from Port Stephens mid week for a shot at some snapper with a few mates. I was also keen to throw some early morning stickballs at the resident kings to see if I could find any surface activity,” says Thornely.
“Only a day prior I was chatting to a local tackle store owner about some local snapper appearing on the surface and I thought that would be good to see.
“Well, a dozen casts in with a Halco popper and I hear the sounds of surface fish 15 metres in front of the boat. I couldn’t believe I was seeing a dozen big Snapper on the surface smashing a bait ball. Given I had the popper in hand I flicked the popper into the hole, and bang, hooked up the moment it hit the water!
“End result an 82cm red on a popper. Skull dragged him in on kingy gear and looked at the boys in complete laughter. We couldn’t believe what just happened let alone only discussed it the day prior.”
Not something you see everyday, a snapper caught on a popper!
