I’m really impressed with this US-designed threadline. I’ve been using it extensively over the past eight months and have found it an excellent product. It’s stylish, functional, well made and seemingly performs as well as much bigger name brands.
As a 2000 size reel, it’s ideally suited to most freshwater, estuary and inshore fishing situations. I’ve loaded it with about 120m of 6lb FireLine and have been using it mainly in my home waters of Jervis Bay, targeting salmon, tailor, bream, pannie snapper, drummer and squid. I’ve hooked some cracking big sambos on it and also more than a few solid wash drummer. I’ve been really surprised at how well the Supreme’s drag has held up to these fish, especially considering some of the salmon and pigs were in excess of 3kgs. I don’t necessarily recommend this type of gear for pig fishing – but it certainly makes for some exciting action!
The reel features an attractive gun metal anodised body with gold highlights and a bronze/gold spool. A very modernistic carbon fibre handle and oversize EVA knob add extra class to what is already a smart and attractive reel.
The little Supreme features magnesium construction for lightness (the reel weighs only 195g all up). The gearing and drag remain in top class order, even after numerous casts, retrieves and fish caught in saltwater environments. A speedy 6.2:1 retrieve ratio makes it an ideal reel for active luring, especially with plastics and small metals.
I teamed the test reel up with a US-made Pflueger Supreme SP701UL 1-3kg rod, a seven-foot single piece stick with a sensitive tip and nice fast action ideal for casting the 3-inch Gulp Jigging Grubs I’ve found so effective in wash situations (especially on big black drummer). All up, this is a nicely balanced outfit that performs far better than its pricing would indicate. RRP for the rod and the reel is about $299 each. Pflueger products should be readily available at all decent tackle shops.
