ACROBATIC, hard-fighting and abundant – West Aussie salmon are a true southern sportfishing icon with the annual autumn salmon run drawing thousands of anglers to the south and south west coasts, and when the run is strong, to the metropolitan area.

These fish provide fantastic and accessible fishing opportunities for anglers of all ages and skill levels, who spend $331 million annually salmon fishing, providing a significant boost to the regional economy.

“Salmon is a part of the West Aussie fishing lifestyle,” said Dr Andrew Rowland, CEO of Recfishwest, WA’s peak recreational fishing sector body representing the State’s 750,000 recreational fishers.

“It’s WA’s salmon abundance that underpins the awesome fishing experiences enjoyed by so many anglers in the Great Southern, South West and when we get a good run in the metro.

“This is a fantastic WA sportfishery accessible to so many West Aussies – that’s why we’re committed to protecting it and celebrating it.”

Supported by Shimano and Western Angler magazine, the “Awesome Autumn of Salmon” will be headlined by the 2022 Salmon Slam.

Following the success of last year’s Slam, which saw more than 1,600 fishers take part, the smartphone app-based comp is one of the biggest fishing competitions in Australia.

It’s easy to enter – simply download the Salmon Slam app from the Apple or Google Play store, catch a salmon, take a photo of the fish on a brag mat with the ‘#SS2022’ tournament code visible and log your catch via the app.

There’s plenty of great fishing prizes to be won each month during the course of the competition, as well as overall prizes including a fishing kayak, a drone and a Shimano prize pack valued at more than $3,000 for the overall random winner.

A Shimano Stella SWC 5000XG and a Coltsniper BB rod, among plenty of other Shimano goodies, is on offer for simply catching a salmon and entering it into the 2022 Salmon Slam.

“We’re delighted to have Western Angler as a great organic West Aussie brand and Shimano as one of the highest regarded industry brands there is throw their weight behind our salmon campaign this year,” Dr Rowland said.

“With thousands of salmon anglers getting involved, along with a wide range of other industry supporters supporting and sponsoring this event – collectively it sends a powerful message that salmon abundance must be protected to ensure West Aussies can continue to enjoy these fantastic sportfishing experiences.”
