Tribute to tackle industry pioneer

JOHN Dunphy, the late former managing director of Dunphy Sports has been described as the most influential figure in the Australian fishing tackle industry.

Dunphy died in January this year and following his passing was paid tribute by many in rec fishing circles for his efforts in pioneering change within the tackle industry and furthering the cause of recreational fishing in Australia.

In a tribute posted at, well known fishing writer and TV personality Steve Starling describes Dunphy as “far and away the most influential figure in the local tackle industry for well over four decades.”

Following his passing, former NSW Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson and Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay announced an offshore artificial reef at Port Botany would be named in honour of John Dunphy.

In an obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald this week, Dunphy has amongst many other achievements been lauded for his efforts in helping to introduce the “Baitrunner” reel design to the world.
