THE opening of the freshwater angling season in many waterways in the southwest of WA began on the 1st September.
The voice of Western Australia’s recreational fishers, Recfishwest chief executive Dr Andrew Rowland said this trout season looks to be promising with hundreds of thousands of trout stocked into Southwest waterways over the last few years.
“Whether a professional fly fisher or a family with a few handlines and a hand full of earth worms the Western Australian freshwater angling scene is a unique experience different to most other fishing in WA,” Dr Rowland said.
In 2012 alone there was over half a million trout stocked into the nine main rivers and 29 associated waterways of the Southwest which will have now reached legal size.
“It can sometimes take skill and patience but the beauty of the Southwest river systems and the chance to catch a fish for the table is a great reward. It’s encouraging that so many anglers take the opportunity to cast a line as fishing for trout is an enjoyable and rewarding activity and I wish all fishers a safe and successful season,” he said.
