Rivers and streams in Victoria are now open for trout fishing. Victoria’s four-month trout closed season is to allow mature fish tospawn and protect future stocks of the fish in many waterways.
And in time for the season opening, the popular Goulburn River was given a further boost with a healthy stocking of trout. As part of a $13.5 million commitment to improve recreational fishing opportunities in Victoria, last year, the state’s Government introduced a three-year trout stocking program in the Goulburn River. This saw the release of more than 2300 brown and rainbow trout, all of catchable size, into the iconic waterway in the last 12 months.
As a region that has suffered from bushfires in recent years this stocking program will help ensure future fishing opportunities in the Goulburn River for rec anglers, while providing a boost to local economies in affected areas.
