The Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the NT is joining with its sister organisation in Western Australia, Recfishwest, to provide an innovative training and development opportunity for young people interested in future leadership roles in recreational fishing.
Recfishwest and AFANT are seeking expressions of interest for the Recfishwest Young Future Leaders in Recreational Fishing Project to be held in WA from 5 to 10 March next year.
The program will see 15 successful candidates from Western Australia and the Northern Territory, aged under 35, undertake training in the future management of recreational fishing.
Recfishwest A/Executive Director Kane Moyle said participants would learn how to best apply their skills through community groups, advisory committees, recreational fishing advocacy groups or government agencies.
“We ran our first course for future leaders in 2008 and it was designed to give younger Western Australians a voice and opportunity to be involved in maintaining the quality of our state’s recreational fishing future,” Moyle said.
“Now AFANT is joining the program with Recfishwest and that is going to provide the same opportunity for young people from the Northern Territory,” explained Moyle.
AFANT Executive Officer Chris Makepeace has welcomed the chance to work with Recfishwest on the program and the opportunity it provides for young Territorians.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people interested in the recreational fishing industry as successful applicants for the program will be mentored by recognised leaders within the recreational fishing industry during the course which will be held at the Abrolhos Islands off the WA coast with some time aboard a WA Department of Fisheries research vessel,” Mr Makepeace said.
Application forms are available on the Recfishwest website and must be lodged before December 31.
