Last weekend saw the succesful running of the 2009 Whitesands Tournament held out of Huskisson on the NSW South Coast.
The event run by the Jervis Bay Game Fishing Club featured an impressive list of prizes and awards for entrants. Over 30 categories offered prizes and there were also lucky give-aways and raffle prizes, all provided by the event’s many generous sponsors.
Most competing boats fished everyday with conditions reported as favourable. The fishing started off slow, but finished strongly thanks to a flurry of yellowfin tuna and shark action. A growing crowd on shore saw the weigh-in of a potential Australian Record blue shark caught by Tim Morgan on Baja. The shark weighed 188kg and was caught on 10kg line.
The heaviest yellowfin tuna of 41kg was caught aboard Mad 1, Nick Pearce’s heaviest mako of 238kg was caught aboard Outcast. Team Conflict took out Champion Boat T&R, Mike James with a 30kg yellowfin aboard Illusion took out heaviest fish by a junior; Brad Read the most points as a small fry aboard Black Jack. Most tag and release points by a female angler went to Maria Carnevale aboard Marlin Feeder. Jakob Murphy on board Juzrah tallied the most T&R points by a small fry; Team Frigate scored the most tagged & released sharks.
