MODERN camping and cooking equipment has been a game changer for quick weekends getaways. I have an assortment of compact equipment that’s easy to grab, takes up little space, and is simple to use when you get to your destination. Items such as compact chairs, ice boxes, tents, tables, etc, are all must-have items.
Another item that’s essential for camping and handy for weekend picnics is a portable BBQ.
I’ve recently been using a STOV, an Australian designed portable flat packed BBQ.
The STOV BBQ comes with its own carry bag. The ultra slim, flat packed STOV weighs only 3.6kg and fits almost anywhere in the car, boat or canoe. As a bonus, it also takes up very little space at home. The packed dimensions are: 47cm x 29cm x 4cm.
Inside the carry bag you’ll find several stainless steel pieces that join to form the BBQ. Once you’ve put it together once or twice, it can be assembled in around a minute. It then connects with a standard (EN417 threaded) butane/propane gas cartridge. That’s the same gas canister regularly available at most outdoor stores.
Once connected, use a lighter at the opposite end to ignite the gas and you’re cooking. It’s incredibly simple and effective. It takes less than 5 minutes to heat up. The burner features 2.4kW of power.
The grill area is spacious enough to cook three or four average steaks. You could also fit around seven or eight sausages or kebabs or four or five burgers. It’s a good size and would feed two to four people depending on what you’re cooking.
Another bonus is it’s simple to clean! The brushed 304 stainless steel construction has a smooth finish and can be wiped down and cleaned quickly. The top grill section is also easily removable for thorough cleaning if necessary.
Once you’re done, the STOV cools in around the same time it takes to eat your meal. Then it’s simply a matter of cleaning and taking apart the pieces for transport.
A portable BBQ that’s ready to go for impromptu fishing trips is a handy piece of equipment. It’s also useful for picnics or camp grounds where open fires aren’t allowed. And depending on your state’s local rules, may even be legally used during a fire ban.
The STOV BBQ comes with a 5 year warranty and free shipping.
Overall I’ve found the STOV very convenient, well designed, and built tough for the outdoors.
The STOV BBQ is priced at $319.00. STOV also sells an number of useful accessories.
