PLANS to head to the South Island of New Zealand to chase kings were cancelled as wild weather hit the country, but with plenty of options still available I flew across the Tasman to the North Island to catch up with good friend Milan Radonich. While the weather continued to limit our options we headed up the winding road to the Coromandel Peninsula for a few days to chase kingfish and snapper.
The Coromandel Peninsula is certainly one of the most picturesque places around. It’s only a few hours drive north from Auckland and is well known for its spectacular scenery. Even better is the fact that the Peninsula provides consistent fishing year round.
Milan has fished these waters for many years and has caught some monstrous kings to over 40kg throughout the region. The Peninsula boasts a huge network of islands dispersed within a couple of kilometres of the coastline. These provide a great deal of habitat in the form of rocky points, channels and outcrops…
