Bassing with the baby

I WAS told my days spent fishing were numbered after the baby arrived. I’m a responsible adult now, a father, and frivolous pursuits like fishing should be put on hold for a while. On the flipside, adults should have a responsibility to ignite a child’s interest in the outdoors. There are worse things kids could be doing.

So yesterday afternoon I wheeled my 12-week-old boy, Ethan, to a likely looking bass spot. I figured it’s never too early, right?

The gusty southerly change made fishing difficult. I flicked a few surface Gurglers around some snags, however, the fish had other plans.

So did Ethan!

While the fresh air, the trees and the water caught his attention, it didn’t take long before he cried his way back to his car seat and the comforting arms of his mum. Now I truly understand the meaning of “baby steps”.

Trips like this may be short and sometimes fishless, but they are great fun, and for me, a new challenging way to fish while introducing a new recruit to the world of fishing.

What's your reaction?
