Water is being directed into Lake Boga in Northern Victoria, the scene of a major fish kill in late 2007 when its channelled supply of water ceased to flow after its distribution and storage status was changed.
The lack of water not only resulted in a major fish kill but reportedly had a significant negative economic impact on local communities.
VRFish Chairman Geoff Cramer congratulated the Victorian Government and Goulburn Murray Water for their initiative in filling the lake and recognising its significant social and economic value to the local community.
Cramer went on to say “this is great news for all recreational fishers and with the return of good water levels I would encourage Fisheries Victoria to resume stocking Lake Boga with Murray cod and golden perch to create a native fish fishery that we can all enjoy.”
