The Hunter River on the NSW Central Coast is the venue for the Wine and Walers Family Fun Day Carp Muster on Sunday October 10.
Organised by Industry & Investment NSW, Wyndham Estate and local recreational fishers the free event coincides with the annual Family Fun Day to raise awareness of the plight of native fish. Every carp caught and weighed-in before 2pm will give anglers a ticket in a draw for a chance at taking home a prize.
Fish Friendly Farms program coordinator, Charlotte Jenkins, said the carp muster was a great way for local families to learn about the river and to find out what our native fish need to survive and thrive.
“There are many factors that contribute to the poor health of our waterways, not just carp,” Ms Jenkins said.
“But carp can be an indicator of river health and they thrive in poor river conditions and that’s a concern. They have the potential to interrupt the lifecycle and habitat of native fish by competing directly for food and shelter,” she said.
The event is planned to begin at 10am on the river bank at Wyndham Estate, 700 Dalwood Road, Branxton – those wishing tp participate need to register. There are also other activities on the day including horse and cart rides, wine spitting competitions and a Light Horse demonstration.
The carp muster is part of the Fish Friendly Farms program funded by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.
