Fisheries closure plays out at by-election

THE highly criticised decision by the NSW Liberal Nationals to close the world renowned Cronulla Fisheries site has come back to bite the O’Farrell Government – if the result of last week’s Miranda by-election is anything to go by.

Labor’s Barry Collier had a massive win in Miranda with a record swing against
the government, with one of the key issues raised in the by-election being the decision to close the historic Fisheries site.

The closure decision is on record as one of the worst by any government, causing Rev. Fred Nile and the Upper House to hand down a damning report recommending the closure’s reversal.

Most of the 155 highly professional scientists and managers affected by the closure lived in the Shire with many in the seat of Miranda. A number of those staff met with the former Minister Annesley during the battle to save the site and left bitterly disappointed with his lack of action.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Sports and Recreation Minister Graham Annesley, who left politics to take up the chief executive role at the Gold Coast Titans Rugby League Club.
