Fishing for Murray cod data

THE next of a series of public fishing events to help gather data on Murray cod will take place in South Australia on 13 June.

The event, hosted by the Riverland Fishing Club at Lyrup Flats Boat Ramp will allow fishers to provide catch information that will add to current understanding of the condition of Murray cod stocks.

PIRSA Director Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, Sean Sloan, said the fishing events are gathering momentum and are helping to provide crucial data on Murray cod.

“I’m thrilled at the enthusiastic response of recreational fishers to help with research through the collection of data. This data is critical for future evaluation of stock enhancement of Murray cod in the South Australian River Murray”.

The Stock Enhancement Program aims to support the conservation and recovery of Murray cod in South Australia so that it may one day support a sustainable recreational fishery in the region.

“Community participation is vital to help provide the information we need to assess the recovery of the stock,” said Mr Sloan.

The next recreational fishing event is being hosted and run by the Riverland Fishing Club at Lyrup Flats Boat Ramp on Saturday 13 June, from 7.30am to 3.00pm, and is open to the public.

The event is supported by PIRSA and RecFish SA.
