Flathead Classic tally tops 5000

THE Gold Coast Sportfishing Club’s 2012 Flathead Classic culminated over the weekend with an impressive tally of around 5000 flathead caught & released.

Approximately 180 teams competed in the event from October 3-6, with this year’s winning team, Team Dog, reportedly accounting for 138 flatties and 5515 points. Team Dog’s Graham Dodds also took out Champion Angler. Second team was Team Sands with 4525 points, followed by Team On Strike with 4432 points.

Top female angler was Fay Rowheder and top junior Cooper Sands.

Fisho’s David Green and his Dead Fishy team of son Michael and Aykut Ahmet came in 11th in team results. Greeny told Fisho this morning that the weather was good for the event and most fish were caught “south” along the Gold Coast’s broadwater. He reports that the winning team concentrated their efforts at a popular location near to Crab Island, with trolled Micro Mullets proving the winning method.

Michael Green scored the biggest flattie of the Classic with a 96cm monster that also ate a Micro Mullet and took quite some time to tame on 3lb braid and 10lb leader.
