THE BETS Hobie Round Four bream event was run at Forster last weekend in bright and sunny conditions, making a pleasant change from the recent deluges engulfing NSW.
Forster is one of the country’s ultimate bream arenas with plenty of big fish ready for the catching and plenty of oyster encrusted obstacles to break anglers’ hearts (and wallets). Its very much man v bream in this territory and the battle is well, almost gladitorial. Fitting then that the winners of Sunday’s battle was Team Gladiator Tackle!
For team members Anthony and Rodney Thorpe the weekend would provide a chance to do the double. Last year the father and son team had a huge result in the BETS and Megabream event week, winning the BETS event and placing highly in the Megabream event. In similar conditions the pair had a great chance to repeat the feat but rather than battle the famous Forster fish head on in the oyster racks the team chose to target fish feeding on the flats further in to the Wallis Lake complex.
With prawns skipping across the surface in the morning sun only one approach was needed – skipping a lure prawn like across the surface!
Using a Gladiator Kozami surface lure Rodney pulled a quick three fish to set the team up nicely. Throughout the day the team compiled a quality bag of fish with the feature fish of the bag being a 1.31kg cracker that took out the event’s Big Bream prize.
The BETS Big Bream was this 1.31kg cracker!
The team finished the day with a 3.52kg bag for first place and a healthy $3000 prize cheque.
The BETS Series is no stranger to a sense of deja vu and if the Thorpe’s second consecutive win wasn’t enough, second place also went to last year’s same father and son team of John and Beau Startin of Team Bream On. With a 3.40kg bag the pair scored a $2000 cheque and a Mako Eyewear Prize Pack.
With well over half the field presenting a bag of five fish it was a great day’s fishing.
