Further to this week’s news of a run of big black marlin on Cairns’ outer reefs (see related story in News – “Fisho’s ad man scores 800-pounder”) came an unexpected capture.
In A Meeting, a 51-foot Bertram, out trolling lures yesterday for scaly mackerel and mackerel tuna for use as black marlin skip baits had a surprise hookup.
Trolling near to North Opal Reef (east of Cairns) the boat hooked an estimated 50kg black marlin. The billfish was hooked on one of Halco’s popular Laser Pro bluewaterlures and provided an explosive 15 minute battle on 15kg tackle.
The capture was a sweet one for angler Steve Wille as it was his first marlin.
