Monster prawn caught in the Gulf of Carpentaria

A JUMBO leader prawn caught in the Gulf of Carpentaria and published on ABC Rural’s website this week has sparked a social media frenzy.

Kai Thomas caught the forearm-sized prawn while commercial fishing in the Gulf.

Leader prawns are less popular than the better known tiger and banana varieties but just as tasty according to Austral Fisheries northern division manager Andrew Prendergast.

“They’re a hardy prawn so there’s quite a strong tail. They’re just as nice as any other prawn,” he said.

So far there’s been no confirmation on how it was cooked, what side dishes were involved and what it was washed down with!
