CONCERNED anglers on the NSW South Coast have been pushing for a wind back of commercial netting in Lake Illawarra and adjoining coastal waters via a petition to the the NSW Legislative Assembly.
Lake Illawarra currently has 34 commercial fishing licence holders, which according to local fishing groups is an unsustainable number of netters for this heavily pressured fishery.
The petition instigated by “Sam and Andrew Fisherman” has so far reportedly received over 1600 signatures and has received support from local MPs and the Shooters & Fishers Party.
The organisers of the petition are also urging fishos to have their say on the proposed changes to commercial fishing in the state via the NSW DPI’s reform program.
