WHAT a crazy month March was, the fishing was hot and so was the weather as we continue to see high water temps of close to 28 degrees.
I fished around 26 days of March which is fantastic for this time of year as we can lose a few days to rainy and windy conditions.
The main event this time of year is the arrival of school-sized longtail tuna, and this year the bulk of the fish were a little late. Unseasonal conditions, a lack of cyclonic activity, no rain and high water temps all contributed to their late arrival, but now they are here they should stick around until late May.
Other species landed were big cobia, golden trevally, Spanish mackerel, diamond trevally, big queenfish, mack tuna, coral trout, scarlets and more. One group managed 14 species in one day which was fantastic fishing.
Looking forward to April and May will see even more longtail tuna action as keen anglers travel far and wide to fish with us in pursuit of one of Australia’s best sportfish.
We will also see some more catches of the usual species and the weather should start to turn it on with some autumn glass outs.
If you are after dates for the coming months please be in touch now we can give you the best dates and tides we have available.
In other news we will be welcoming a new guide Murray Smith to the team. Murray is a true local with over 40 years of fishing experience in Hervey Bay and up and down the East Coast.
In his early years, fishing for whiting off the beaches and pelagics off the iconic Urangan Pier in Hervey Bay is where he found his obsession. Murray or “Muz” as he is known in the fishing industry has spent his whole life fishing and boating
Muz has targeted almost anything that swims in our region, from bottom fishing in his early days for reef fish, fishing in various game fishing comps targeting billfish on light tackle to stalking the flats with a fly rod for tailing golden trevally.
Muz has appeared on various segments of the very successful Fishing DVD and has also been a part of discovering some new exciting flats fishing opportunities in Hervey Bay.
Muz’s vessel is a custom 5.5m hooker centre console which is perfect for the Hervey Bay waters. Muz’s experience is an asset to Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing, his knowledge of the waters along with his calm and professional approach to guiding will make a day on the water with him one you won’t forget. We look forward to seeing Muz guide plenty of anglers on some great fish in the future.
