Report: Top End post-wet bite continues

THE fishing in the Top End has continued to be first class in recent weeks following the NT’s best wet season for a number of years.

Fisho received numerous reports of quality catches in the north, notably of barra, including the following from Phil Weidemier of Phil’s Afforable Barra Tours.

Pictured above is a very happy Brian Campbell from Budgeowi in NSW with a 97cm barra he caught at Shady Camp while fishing a charter with PABT.

Another southern visitor to the Top End, Ken Gill from North Haven in NSW (top right)  also tasted success at Shady Camp with a 102cm barra. After the catch and release Ken said “I fish every day back home but nothing can come up to these big barra, if you really enjoy a great fight.”

Phil Weidemier told Fisho both barra were caught at the mouth of the Mary River (locally called the Sampan) on the troll using gold B52 lures.

Phil says Brian Campbell caught two big barra on the day – 94cm and 97cm fish – both of which were released while Ken Gill also accounted for 76 and 79cm which apparently tasted delicious later that night!

Pictured above is Phil’s Affordable Barra Tours client Ross Roderick from Newcastle who bagged a couple of solid threadfin.

Following a period of memorable barra fishing last month, Phil Weidemier says the threadfin salmon got in on the act and were at times so thick that the barra couldn’t get to the lures!
