IF snagging a feisty rainbow trout wasn’t exciting enough, keen recreational anglers can now add further enjoyment to their fishing experience by catching a tagged fish and receiving a trout lure as a reward.
As part of the development of the NSW trout strategy, 900 tagged yearling rainbow trout have been released into Carcoar Dam today, with Member for Bathurst, The Hon. Paul Toole, assisting in the release. A further 800 tagged yearlings have been released into Khancoban Pondage and 1,500 yearlings into Oberon Day in the past two years to combat predation from redfin. These Carcoar fish were 22 cm in length. It is thought that larger trout will do better in the presence of redfin, which have had a negative effect on all three impoundments since they were illegally introduced.
Those who catch a tagged trout should report their information online HERE or by phoning 02 6051 7760. Following the report, anglers will be rewarded with an Oar-Gee “Little Ripper” lure in return.
This information will help DPI Fisheries determine a size class of stocked fish that can avoid redfin predation and improve fishery into the future.
