Rex Hunt to front Keep Australia Fishing rally this weekend

MARINE parks, super trawlers, boat ramps and greater recognition by Governments are on the priority list for a public rally on fishing rights to be held at Victoria’s Torquay Anglers Club on Sunday 2 June starting at 9.30 am.

Legendary Aussie angler Rex Hunt will lead the rally to raise the profile of recreational fishing with Governments and the community. Rex will be joined on stage by well-known Victorian fishing celebrities Lee Rayner and Adam Royter.

Around 5 million Australians go fishing each year – a significant percentage of these anglers are Victorians. Recreational fishing is Australia’s greatest leisure and sporting activity. Around $10 billion is spent on fishing each year. Much of this expenditure is in rural and regional areas, making recreational fishing a significant contributor to the economies of these communities.

Australians are facing significant threats to their rights to go fishing. These threats emanate from a range of government policies including lockouts in marine parks, environmental destruction from super trawlers and sub-standard boating and fishing infrastructure.

Anglers want – in fact, demand that – Governments recognise who we are and appreciate all the economic, environmental, health and educational benefits we bring to local communities and to families. That’s what this rally is about – bringing the community together. Aussie anglers expect Recognition, Consultation and a Fair Go!
