MOST fishos would have a 2-4kg spin outfit in their quiver. Ideal for a range of fishing scenarios from estuary, freshwater and even light saltwater use, a 2-4kg stick covers much of the fishing most of us do. This combo from Abu Garcia is a great example of your typical 2-4kg outfit. Featuring a Veritas 702SPL rod (two-piece, seven feet in length) and a Orra S30 spin reel, this outfit is both affordable and practical. I’ve been using a test outfit for the past several months. Spooled with 6lb FireLine, it’s proved a great all round set-up. I’ve used it to catch Murray cod, EPs, bass, flatties, salmon and bream. The rod itself has proven light and sensitive while possessing enough backbone to enable decent casting performance and good fish fighting ability. It’s the sort of rod that works across a range of fishing applications – I’ve used it as a soft plastics stick, a bait rod and while casting hard-bodies, metals and small poppers/stickbaits. It features “nanotechnology”, which the boffins at Abu say “manipulates graphite at an atomic level for improved compression strength (by introducing) nano particles to the resin that binds fishing rods. This nano enhanced resin supports and bolsters graphite fibres by surrounding them with nano-spheres creating a stronger bond and increasing the compression strength of the blank”. As well as the nanotechnology, the rod sports stylish white and black livery, Fuji “K” guides, an Abu designed “Extreme Exposure” reel seat (which provides increased blank contact for extra sensitivity), EVA grips and a handy Texas rig style hook keeper. Being two piece, the rod is easily transportable. Teamed with the Orra S30 reel, which features seven bearings and carries well over 200m of 6lb braid, the Veritas has impressed me as being the sort of outfit you use more than you realise. It’s certainly earned itself a place on my boat.
