Flying Fisherman is a new addition to the vast range of sunglass brands available in Australia. The brand also carries a range of illustrated t-shirts, hats, and the SunBandit protective headwear range. This “Buff” style product is great for wearing around the neck and pulling up over your face when the sun really heats up. They’re a great addition to sunscreen for tropical weather.
But back to the sunnies, I’ve been wearing a pair of the St Croix model for fishing and driving this past summer. The St Croix features a polycarbonate lens and is constructed from a TR-90 frame, which Flying Fisherman says is extremely tough and lightweight. I can’t argue with that.
These sunnies have been given some rough treatment in the car and boat and they’re still in one piece. The polycarbonate lens is a good choice for someone looking for a lightweight pair of sunnies. This is where these sunglasses really stand out – they are incredibly light. However, like all polycarbonate lenses, they may be light, but they do scratch easily and it’s worth using a carry case and bag to ensure no scratches occur during transit.
Mine feature the walnut frame with amber lens, which works well in both freshwater for spotting fish and around saltwater estuaries. The same St Croix frame is also available in various lens and frame colours. It also features a vented rubber nose pad. While this works great for keeping the glasses from slipping off, they do tend to stick a little on the nose in humid conditions. I guess that’s the price to pay for sunnies that won’t fall off when leaning over to land a fish. If you are worried about losing your sunnies overboard, Flying Fisherman also do a nifty floating sunglass strap – a good insurance policy!
Flying Fisherman has a complete range of sunglasses including higher end glass lens models through to polycarbonate, all available in various frame and lens colours to suit everybody. And best of all they’re quite affordable. My pair retails for $129.95 which represents pretty good value.
