Tiwis take over Melville Island fishing lodges

A NEW tourism venture has been formed in the Top End by a group of Tiwi Islanders, the traditional land owners of Bathurst and Melville Islands.

The formation of Tiwi Islands Adventures was announced last week by Chairman of the Tiwi Land Council, Gibson Illortaminni.

“Tiwi Islands Adventures has been established to provide a range of remote ‘soft adventure’ holiday experiences which include professionally guided barramundi fishing, wildlife safaris and bird watching,” Mr Illortaminni said.

The new venture recently purchased Melville Island Lodge and the Johnson River Camp from previous owner Mike Baxter. It has also commenced construction of a third venue on Bathurst Island which will be open for business in March 2013.

Baxter has been retained as Managing Director of Tiwi Islands Adventures with a Board that includes Mr. Andrew Tipungwuti as its Chairman.

The Tiwi Islands have a collective population of around 2,500 people and are situated 60kms to the north of Darwin.
