Fisheries Victoria is seeking comments on a draft Inland Waters Classification that classifies all inland waters in Victoria as trout, native or mixed fisheries – with the aim of promoting and developing rec fishing opportunities in these fisheries.
The draft Classification maps the distribution of key angling species, current fisheries management arrangements and classifies waters based on social and economic values, waterway management and biodiversity criteria.
Fisheries Victoria says capturing the knowledge and aspirations of recreational fishers and other stakeholders is critical to developing an effective Inland Waters Classification. Anyone with an interest in recreational fishing is encouraged to make a submission.
The closing date and time for written submissions is 9am on 16 August 2010.
The draft Classification was prepared in consultation with the Inland Waters Classification Reference Group which included individuals with expertise in trout, native and mixed fisheries including representatives of Native Fish Australia, the inland fishing recreational industry, the Australian Trout Foundation and VRFish.
Copies of the draft Classification are available at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing or by phoning 136 186. Submissions can be emailed to Anthony Plummer here or sent by mail to:
