Towing plastic lures behind a fuel-guzzling motor across vast tracts of ocean is actually quite a complicated business. It appeals to those of us who have patience and persistence and who like to catch really big fish. I spend a lot of time at sea trying to catch big things on lures. There are often plenty of contemplative hours between bites in which you plot and plan the best approach to getting something to rise up out of the depths and chew on the fake fish or squid-like lure dragging along in your wake.
The following is an overview of some of the lessons I’ve learnt over almost 40 years of dragging lures behind boats. Whether you want a wahoo, a tuna or a marlin, there are commonalities these pelagic fish all share, and working out the where, when and why is the key to success.
