READERS of America’s well respected Sportfishing magazine may well have choked on their Corn Flakes while reading a news item in SF’s current April issue.
The story titled Impossible Discovery! – A Lake Full of Pelagic Game Fish went to great lengths to outline details of an “unexplored lake” in western New Guinea that is reportedly full of landlocked gamefish such as marlin, wahoo, mako sharks and a “new species of tuna.”
The highly believable story, complete with creative image of an angler hooked to a billfish atop an outrigger craft, has certainly had anglers from all over the world excitedly wanting to find out more about this amazing location… The magazine’s issue date should’ve given the game away…
Fisho’s own DR Ben Diggles who is quoted in the story, told us he has received a flood of emails from readers who were completely hoodwinked by the story.
Well done to Sportfishing’s Editor-In-Chief Doug Olander who has been setting the benchmark with his tongue in cheek April fools’ stories for several years.
