Book Release: Returned Soldier

REGULAR Fishing World readers may recall an inspirational story we ran a couple of years ago about an ex-soldier who crossed Bass Strait in a tinny, twice.

The man in question was James Prascevic who had decided to take on the treacherous Bass Strait, solo, in his 4.55m aluminium runabout to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute. He travelled between Lorne, Victoria to Smithton, Tasmania on the 29th of Oct 12 and returned to Lorne on the 3rd of Nov 12 without stopping or assistance.

During his crossings Prascevic consulted with The Victorian Volunteer Coast Guard, Bureau of Meteorology and the Water Police.

James Prascevic in the tinny he crossed Bass Strait in to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute.

Obviously not one to stay still for long, James has now penned a book about his amazing story – Returned Soldier, published by Melbourne Books. In the book James details his transition from plumber to infantryman in the Australian Defence Force where he served in Timor, Iraq and Afhganistan.

After later suffering from debilitating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression, James went on to set up the Different Challenge website. He also fund raised for the Black Dog Institute, leading him to tackle Bass Strait to raise awareness of mental illness.

In Returned Solder, the writer provides an honest, firsthand account of of the front lines of combat, the training it took to get there and the unglamorous aftermath of war.

Returned Soldier by James Prascevic is published by Melbourne Books – RRP $29.95.
