Jack guru lands Gold Coast jungle perch

REGULAR readers of Fisho may recall an angler profile we ran last year on Gold Coast based fisho Mick Horn, aka the “jack guru”.

The article written by David Green details Mick’s obsession for targeting big jacks in his local waterways, a passion that sees him fishing up to four times a week.

In the piece, Greeny describes Mick as “one of the most passionate anglers I’ve ever met”.

In recent days, Mick caused a stir on facebook when he posted photos of one of his latest catches. Notably, it wasn’t another monster “red dog” but a species more commonly found these days in rainforest country much further north. The fish in question was a chunky jungle perch around the mid 30cms length mark taken by Mick somewhere in the Gold Coast hinterland.

He says the JP took a TT jig spin attached to a TT 3/8oz Headlockz jighead and 3-inch Houdini Minnow softie.

Not surprisingly, Mick got quite a shock after pulling out what he thought was a bass from near a fallen tree just off the creek’s main rapids.

After a few photos the great looking JP was released to fight another day.

Such captures like this may well become more common in the Gold Coast hinterland following the recent release of jungle perch fingerlings bred in captivity. See details here.

Great catch, Mick and thanks for sharing with Fisho readers.
