The highlighted photo portrays the landing of a big southern bluefin tuna by Neil Rowlands of Culburra on the NSW South Coast.
The capture was somewhat meritorious as Rowlands caught the 111kg SBT while fishing solo on board the Black Watch flybridge cruiser Highlander – as he couldn’t rustle up a crew at short notice.
No stranger to gamefishing alone, and with several solo striped marlin captures to his credit, Rowlands reportedly hooked the tuna on a trolled Halco Laser Pro lure on 24kg tackle off the Drum Canyons out of Jervis Bay.
The battle went on for a few hours before Rowlands brought the SBT boatside, having called up the crew of nearby boat Moontan to assist in wrestling the big tuna on board. Andrew Finney, son of Fisho writer Greg, jumped on board to help out.
Several mako sharks were seen circling the boat before the tuna was finally brought aboard.
