Sydney GFC’s 2009 Peter Goadby Memorial Tournament

The Sydney Game Fishing Club 2009 Peter Goadby Memorial Tournament was held on the weekend of 4th and 5th April, with close to 40 boats entered.

A strong weather front reached Sydney around 8.30am Saturday with heavy rain and southerly wind gusts of up to 60km/h prevailing for most of the day. In addition, a northerly swell of 2-3m caused a further steep and sharp wind chop made conditions extremely uncomfortable for the larger boats and verged on being “unfishable” for trailer boats. This resulted in the majority of the fleet returning early to Watsons Bay to enjoy Sydney Game Fishing Club’s facilities.

Fishing was also very challenging with Apple Pie (Broken Bay GFC) leading the T&R category with one marlin and nine dolphinfish on the first day.

Sunday’s weather was the antithesis of Saturday with a light NW 10-15km/h breeze and near perfect conditions for all boats. Fish were again proving elusive, creating tight competition between several boats. Black Pete (Broken Bay GFC) won the T&R category with three marlin (including an estimated 250kg blue) and two dolphinfish. Runner-up boat Ambition (Sydney GFC) tagged two marlin and a dolphinfish. Champion angler T&R was James Thackeray on Black Pete (two marlin and a dolphinfish).

Mazara (Sydney GFC) was champion boat in the capture category with a 148kg blue marlin on 24kg line class to Jake Jakobson, who also won the champion angler capture category. The heaviest tuna (or other game fish) category was won by Tantrum (Sydney GFC) with a 44.2kg yellowfin tuna on 24kg line class to Jason Simpson.
