I’VE had the opportunity to field test a pair Fjord Viking waders over the past few months and I must admit that I’m very impressed with the quality and performance.
These are very high quality stocking foot waders and now available locally. If you were given the opportunity to design a pair of chest waders from scratch and had access to input from guides and experienced fly fishermen this is exactly what most people would put down on the design paper and produce.
The list of features includes an exclusive DRYLOC technology that offers exceptional breathability and waterproofing.
Fjord waders are virtually built in two halves. The top section from the waist up is manufactured from a three-layer material that is breathable and waterproof. The waist down is manufactured from a six-layer material that is waterproof and extremely tough for durability.
All seams are stitched, glued and taped so don’t expect to have problems with seam leakage. The legs are shaped to give a comfort fit that makes walking long distances a breeze and makes Fjords look as stylish as a pair of waders can be.
Get down lower and you’ll notice that the neoprene stocking feet are 4mm thick high density material with reinforced ankle guards to reduce wear above the boots and built in gravel guards that are as good as I’ve seen on any waders. These are held by a clip that sits under your wading boot laces and stays in place all day. They also don’t have any protrusions to foul fly lines around your feet while wading or walking.
Another great feature is the Fjord chest to waist conversion. This allows you to lower the top half down to just about waist height if you are only fishing knee deep water or if the sun comes out and things warm up. Simply use the suspender lock system to lift the chest section back up and hold it there if you need to. This makes the Fjord Vikings very versatile in most weather conditions.
The chest section includes a large exterior pocket with a waterproof, zippered storage compartment fro keys, wallet and phone. It also incorporates a fleece lined hand warmer pocket with waterproof zippers for cold weather.
I cannot wait to fish in these waders down at Eucumbene in autumn.
