TESTED: Simms Solarflex shirt

HOT weather fishing doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Specialised fishing shirts have come a long way with more choice and newly designed fabrics to cope with Australia’s scorching sun.

I’ve been wearing the Simms Solarflex shirts over the past two years (while fishing), and in my opinion, these are one of the best shirts available for extreme tropical weather. Unconventional in design, the Solarflex is basically a long sleeve t-shirt with an extra high neck area for sun protection. That’s where the similarities with a t-shirt end. This shirt is made from COR3 fabric which is a lightweight UPF 30 material designed to wick moisture
away from the skin, and is very comfortable to wear.

There’s also a well-designed mesh vent which runs along its seams for added breatheability. In harsh tropical conditions you won’t find another shirt to keep you cooler.

The only feature I would have preferred is a small chest pocket for holding bits and pieces.

Otherwise if you’re looking for a serious hot weather shirt, these are hard to beat for comfort, staying cool, and UV sun protection.
