Weather plays havoc at Dave Irvine Memorial Snapper Classic

THE 2014 Dave Irvine Memorial Snapper Classic (DISC), hosted by the Coffs Harbour Deep Sea Fishing Club was held over the Saturday and Sunday of the June long weekend, with 58 competing boats and kayaks registered.

The weather unfortunately wasn’t favourable for the lure only catch and release annual event, with strong southerly winds all day Saturday resulting in many competitors choosing not to fish. Unfortunately, a strong wind warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on Sunday resulted in the mandatory cancellation of the day’s fishing.

Despite Saturday’s inclement conditions, a total of 122 snapper were caught and released with an average length of 55.32cm. Major prize winners are listed below. To counter future bad weather during the DIMSC, event organisers are looking to include flathead and bream categories next year.

A sit down awards dinner was held on Sunday night with all registered anglers going into the lucky draw to win a Stealth Kayak supplied by Fishing Tackle Australia and a boat/motor/trailer package supplied by Coffs Harbour Marine and BRP Australia.

Team Fishing World, skippered by Guy Jamieson, found some good snapper before the tournament but did not fish the event due to the bad conditions.
