Here’s a rundown of the best new baitcast reels we saw at the recent AFTA tackle trade show.
Shimano Curado K
SHIMANO’S Curado range needs no introduction, and this year we saw the brand new Curado K Series at AFTA.
The K Series features the latest in Shimano’s MicroModule gearing and X-Ship for smooth rotation, combined with the new SVS Infinity braking system for enhanced casting performance.
To withstand saltwater environments, Shimano has incorporated a specially plated pinion gear, combined with a breakwater wall and drainage port to provide protection against corrosion.
Featuring Shimano’s new compact body design, the Curado K is 10 per cent smaller in both length and width when compared to the previous model. This is further enhanced by the metal Hagane Body to provide the reel with added durability and rigidity.
Available in a 200 size in both right and left hand models in multiple gear ratios up to 8.5:1 and fitted with 6+1 Shielded A-RB bearings.

Abu Garcia Revo Inshore low profile
ANOTHER standout this year was Abu Garcia’s fourth generation of the Revo Inshore low profile.
The Revo Inshore low profile baitcast reel features an X2-Cräftic frame for added corrosion protection and High Performance Corrosion Resistant (HPCR) bearings that provide maximum protection under harsh conditions.
Dual anti-reverse gives you additional back up for those high pressure situations and the improved IVCB-6L (Infinitely Variable
Centrifugal Brake) braking system offers even more adjustment and castability with additional locking brake modules.
Featuring an extended handle with large EVA knobs and the upgraded Power Stack Carbon Matrix Drag System the Revo Inshore fishing reel provides improved leverage and extreme drag pressures when fighting large and powerful fish species. Boasting 11kg drag pressure, the unique keyed cartridge drag system provides extreme drag pressures combined with smoothness.
Abu Garcia says durability is at the forefront of the fourth generation of the Revo design. DuraClutch design provides improved engagement and durability, Everslik coated pinion shaft and pawl creates a diamond like coating which improves wear resistance while reducing friction and the D2 Gear Design provides a more efficient gear system while improving durability of the brass gear design.

13 Fishing Concept Z
THIS is a great looking reel, and from all reports, the performance matches its flashy appearance. The 13 Fishing Concept Z uses a proprietary space-age polymer that completely eliminates the need for all ball bearings. The Concept “Z” Casting Reel, according to the company, sets a new standard in reliability and permanently stamps-out the squeaking and corrosion that can occur over time with a technologically advanced Concept Zero Bearing, making the Concept Z an excellent choice for saltwater anglers.
This reel, according to 13 Fishing distributors, Nomad Tackle, is a real game changer thanks to its unique construction, which enables smooth long casts!
Backed by 13 Fishing’s Bulldog drag system, the 13 Fishing Concept “Z” Casting Reel outputs a whopping 22lbs of drag pressure.

Okuma komodo
TACKLE Tactics was showing off the Okuma Komodo, a super heavy-duty low profile baitcast reel suited for chasing big predators.
Now available in two sizes, the Komodo is equally applicable chasing those trophy fish overseas, or targetting our iconic Murray cod or barramundi on home turf.
With a maximum drag of 13.6kg, you can put the brakes on even the biggest predators with ease. With that much drag capabilty, you need a gearing system to match, and the Komodo’s heavy duty stainless steel gearing and shafts allow the reel to handle the abuse of true trophy hunting.
A 7-position velocity cast control system makes launching lures easy. The Komodo also features a rachet, essential for heavy duty trolling or bait fishing.
