Soft plastics surprise

After pulling into Coffs Harbour marina today after a morning session, the Fisho crew was approached by a guy looking for a set of scales. Naturally, that piqued our interest …
As it turned out Matt Gosn, a keen fisho from Sydney’s south, had lucked out when he surprisingly hooked this nice jewie while fishing soft plastics for snapper north of Coffs Harbour. Matt and his mates Tom and James Laurence were fishing out of Tom’s Quintrex Top Ender in preparation for tomorrow’s Dave Irvine Memorial Snapper Classic.

Weighing the jew on 30lb Boga grips saw them bottom out – the fish was estimated to be around 20kgs. We later bumped into Matt and his mates at the briefing for the DIMSC and they told us the jewie weighed in at 26kgs!

Unlike the Top Ender, the Fisho boat didn’t prove to be much of a big fish attractor on day three, only accounting for a couple of pan-sized snapper and a scattering of rock cod and sergeant bakers – on soft plastics. Negotiating the harbour early in the Bar  Crusher was interesting courtesy of 3m plus rolling ground swell. Of note was that the water temp on reefs we’d fished on two previous days had dropped a degree overnight to be around 19 degrees C. Productive areas suddenly seemed devoid of life. By late morning a 20 knot nor-wester and the slow fishing saw the Fisho boat back in the marina.

Here’s hoping the fishing improves for us for the start of the Snapper Classic tomorrow.

Stay tuned…
