ANGLERS are advised to catch and release Australian bass caught in Lake Toolooma, within Heathcote National Park near Waterfall, NSW. Analysis of fish sampled in the lake has indicated per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are present within Australian bass. As a precaution, the EPA and NSW PFAS Taskforce have recommended that anglers do not consume Australian bass caught from the lake.
The presence of PFAS is linked to the historical use of firefighting foam by the NSW Rural Fire Service for training purposes near Waterfall. The water from this area drains into Lake Toolooma. Firefighting foam used today no longer contains PFAS.
