THE S FACTOR – SQUIDGY SECRETS 5
WITH the continuing popularity of lure fishing – soft plastics in particular – lure aficionados are always looking to gather more tips for the arsenal and find out about the latest lures in a bid to get an edge.
The S Factor is the latest in the Squidgy Secrets series, and while clearly a vehicle for the ever-growing Squidgy and Stiffy lure ranges and S Factor scent, the presentation’s exciting fishing footage delivers plenty of lure fishing tips for both tyros and experts alike.
The two-disc feature contains over 20 different fishing segments as well as blurbs on tackle and lure selection. A combination of well paced segments, timely editing, interesting camera angles and underwater footage, keep the The S Factor rolling nicely as it showcases the gamut of sportfishing available in Australia. The DVD covers a lot of accessible bread & butter species. While there’s “exotic” fishing action for NT barra, queenies, fingermarks and the like on Squidgies, the segments I most enjoyed were filmed close to home. Footage filmed on Sydney’s Botany Bay and Port Hacking was of particular interest, being areas I fish regularly. These segments – amazingly filmed in a single day according to executive producer Brett Wilson – contain plenty of shallow water action and highlight that good fishing can be found on many doorsteps, if you know where to look and willing to try different techniques.
The segment on catching whiting (and flathead) on poppers is sure to be eye-opening for anyone who hasn’t tried this form of flats fun. The excitement of numbers of fish virtually fighting over little Stiffy poppers blooped in knee-deep water is captured well.
Variety is the key quality of this DVD, which also covers Coffs Harbour snapper, Port Stephens marlin (caught on Squidgy Bluewater Livies), surface, sand bank, flats, reef, surface, midwater and bottom fishing. It’s all there.
The large array of presenters share years of fishing experience between them. While most aren’t seasoned pros in front of a camera – with the exception of Kaj “Bushy” Busch and Steve Starling – it doesn’t show. The last segment with Bushy and Brett Wilson – the latter is a natural presenter – gives an insight into how Bushy designs lures in his back shed on the NSW South Coast. Footage of the pair enjoying a red-hot EP bite on some prototype vibration lures – available soon as Stiffy Devil Fish Vibes – is a worthy closer to the DVD. At 223 minutes running time The S Factor – Squidgy Secrets 5 is sure to fill in a rainy afternoon. Be warned, viewing the two discs in one sitting without a fishing trip on your horizon isn’t advisable … Recommended viewing. Available now for $24.99.
