VRFISH has congratulated the Portland Sports Fishing Club on receiving a grant of $5,000 from the Victorian Fisheries Authority to promote the the fisher-led Tuna Champions program in the local area.
Funds will be used to support a local tuna competition that only allows properly dispatched, gilled and gutted and iced fish to be weighed in. They will also be supported with a permit to tag SBT, with data to help research into the movements and growth rates of the fish.
This is a great example of grassroots fishers and fishing clubs showing leadership in their local community to promote responsible fishing practices for Victoria’s Southern Bluefin Tuna fishery. Jaala Pulford MP also recently announced that Portland Boat Ramp is now free from parking and launching fees.
